Editorial Design for Crisis-Moment Publishing
Cover design for "Surviving and Thriving: A Pandemic Guide for Black Women and Their Families," developed for the Black Women's Health Imperative.
A publication cover has one job: make someone pick it up. This one had two competing subjects fighting for the same frame, a public health crisis and a civil rights reckoning happening at the same time, and the brief was to hold both without either one canceling the other out. Three colorways were developed to test tonal range: magenta and blue for urgency, a cooler violet-green for gravity, and a red-white-blue variant for the civic angle. Same composition, same information hierarchy, three different emotional registers, all client-ready.
What the work demonstrates:
Editorial hierarchy under pressure — headline, subhead, and imagery had to resolve instantly, no time for a slow read.
Photo compositing and duotone treatment — protest imagery, vaccine imagery, and civic imagery layered into one coherent visual argument rather than a collage.
Brand-safe iteration — three viable directions built off one structure, giving the client real choice without starting from scratch each time.
Subject-matter fluency — public health communication that doesn't flatten a moment of genuine crisis into a stock graphic.
A book cover only gets one chance to make its case. This one made it three different ways, and still made it.
