Case Study: Mini MAKER Stitchery Embroidery Kits Leisure Arts Role: VP, Design and Product Category: Embroidery / Needlecraft, Retail Partner Launch: 2018

The Brief

Embroidery was having its moment. TikTok found it, Pinterest never let it go, and suddenly a craft your grandmother did in a rocking chair was cool again. Leisure Arts wanted in, but craft revivals are fickle. A beginner picks up a hoop, gets bored around skein four, and never touches thread again. The brief was a kit that survived that drop off point, something a first timer could finish in one sitting and actually want on a wall.

The Work

I led product and packaging for the mini MAKER Stitchery line end to end, which meant:

  • Building a design roster that ranged from classic florals and garden scenes to a bold, near neon Mandala on black ground, so the line could sit next to traditional needlecraft and still stop a scroll

  • Engineering the kit around a simple insight: the hoop is the tool during the project and the frame the second the last stitch lands, no separate display step required

  • Specifying stamped fabric, pre-measured floss, and instructions calibrated for a genuine first timer, no assumed knowledge, no wasted skeins

  • Managing development through Leisure Arts' manufacturing and packaging pipeline to hit price points across multiple national retail partners

The Translation

The easy move is a beginner kit that looks like a beginner kit: apologetic, simplified, packaged like a consolation prize. I went the other direction. Neon Mandala isn't shy about being bold and a little maximalist, it just also happens to be six skeins and a stamped pattern a first timer can finish in an evening. Confidence is a design decision. It is not a skill requirement.

The Outcome

The line launched across multiple national retailers in 2018, giving new embroiderers a kit that finishes as a piece worth hanging, not a craft drawer regret. Get the hoop right, and the packaging never has to apologize for what's inside it.
