Case Study: Newark Historical Cherry Blossom Ride Newark Historical Renaissance Ride × Newark Foundry, Bird, The Yard, Together Fund Role: Event Producer, Creative Director, Designer Category: Illustration, Graphic Design, Copywriting Launch: 2022

The Brief

Branch Brook Park has more cherry trees than DC, and almost nobody outside Newark knows it. The brief was to build an annual ride that treated the city itself as the exhibit, routing riders past the buildings that tell Newark's story twice over: the Gilded Age architecture that built the city's reputation, and the new anchors, Audible, NJIT, that are rebuilding it. A logo refresh alone wasn't going to do that work. The ride needed a full visual system that could hold a Beaux-Arts cathedral and a tech HQ in the same breath without either one reading like an afterthought.

The Work

Producing the event and directing its identity meant working both ends of the project at once. On the ground, that meant coordinating route logistics, sponsor participation, and community partners. On paper, it meant building:

  • An illustrated icon set translating each landmark, the Foundry, the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, the Audible Innovation Cathedral, City Hall, into a single consistent architectural line style, so a 19th-century mansion and a converted train station read as part of the same visual family

  • A badge-style event mark anchoring the Cherry Blossom Ride within the larger Newark Historical Renaissance Ride brand, built to extend across future editions

  • Route maps for each of the five stops, sequenced as a legible wayfinding system rather than a decorative overlay

  • A cohesive color palette, dusty rose and terracotta against forest green and warm neutrals, pulling from the blossoms themselves without tipping into greeting-card territory

  • Copywriting and partner lockups for Newark Foundry, Bird, The Yard, and Together Fund, keeping four very different sponsor identities legible in one footer

The Translation

The hard part wasn't drawing buildings. It was deciding what counts as "historic" in a city that's actively rewriting its own skyline. A ride that only celebrated the old Newark would read as nostalgia. A ride that only celebrated the new Newark would erase the reason anyone cared to begin with. The icon set solved that by design, not argument: render a landmark from 1907 and a landmark from 2021 in the exact same line weight, and the eye stops asking which one is more legitimate.

A wayfinding system only earns its keep if it gets someone from Point A to Point B without them stopping to check their phone, which is its own quiet form of design credibility.

The Outcome

The Cherry Blossom Ride now functions as an annual, repeatable brand rather than a one-off flyer, with a system built to extend across future routes and partners. Riders move through Newark's civic history and its current investment story in a single loop, which is a more honest tour than either version told alone.
