Case Study: iHome Portable Rechargeable Speakers — Apple Retail Placement iHome × Apple Location: National, Apple RetailRole: Creative Director, iHomeCategory: Consumer Electronics / Retail Merchandising Launch: 2012

The Brief

Apple's accessory shelf is a courtroom. Every product stands trial next to Beats, Bose, Jawbone, and JBL, and the jury glances for about two seconds before moving on. iHome needed a speaker that could hold that shelf space against brands with ten times the marketing budget, using nothing but the box itself to make the case.

The Work

I directed the product and packaging for the Portable Rechargeable Speakers line, launched in silver and black to sit cleanly against Apple's own hardware palette. That meant:

  • Building a packaging system with a clear window front, so the product sold itself before anyone touched it

  • Designing for shelf density, since this box would sit inches from a dozen competitors doing the exact same job

  • Keeping the iHome mark legible at a glance, in a category where logos tend to shout over each other

The Translation

Retail packaging for Apple isn't really about the product. It's about surviving proximity. A shopper standing at that shelf has already decided they want a portable speaker. The only question left is which box wins the two seconds it takes to reach for one. Every design decision on this project answered that question, not "is this speaker good," but "does this box get picked up first."

The Outcome

The line launched into Apple Retail nationally and earned Best in Class, Retail Packaging Design. On a shelf built to overwhelm, that's the win that matters.
